In 1969 after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., co-founders Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook sought to create opportunities for the people of Harlem, to study dance and the allied arts. Featuring a professional touring company, a school and extensive outreach programs, Dance Theatre of Harlem performs classical ballet, neoclassical works and innovative contemporary pieces reflecting Arthur Mitchell's belief that "ballet belongs to everyone."
